Computing geodesics on triangular meshes
We present a new algorithm to compute a geodesic path over a triangulated surface. Based on Sethian’s Fast Marching Method and Polthier’s straightest geodesics theory, we are able to generate an iterative process to obtain a good discrete geodesic approximation. It can handle both convex and non-convex surfaces. r 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
متن کاملComputing Geodesic Distances on Triangular Meshes
We present an approximation method to compute geodesic distances on triangulated domains in the three dimensional space. Our particular approach is based on the Fast Marching Method for solving the Eikonal equation on triangular meshes. As such, the algorithm is a wavefront propagation method, a reminiscent of the Dijkstra algorithm which runs in O(n log n) steps.
متن کاملSubdivision Curves on Triangular Meshes
Subdivision curves have great importance for many CAD/CAM applications. In this paper we propose a simple method to define subdivision schemes on triangulations. It works by translating to the triangulation a perturbation of a planar binary subdivision. To reproduce this perturbation in the surface we use both, shortest and straightest geodesics, so we call this strategy intrinsic projection me...
متن کاملPL-Geodesics on PL-Continuous Partial Meshes
Geometric characteristics of 2-manifolds embedded in R space have been analyzed from the point of view of differential geometry and topology. In the past, results relevant to these areas have been found for C curves and surfaces. However, current scientific, industrial, entertainment and medical applications, and availability of more powerful point sampling systems, press for characterization o...
متن کاملEstimating Curvature on Triangular Meshes
This paper takes a systematic look at methods for estimating the curvature of surfaces represented by triangular meshes. We have developed a suite of test cases for assessing both the detailed behavior of these methods, and the error statistics that occur for samples from a general mesh. Detailed behavior is represented by the sensitivity of curvature calculation methods to noise, mesh resoluti...
